    Study of Ashoka (Saraca Asoca) Bark w.s.r. to its samples available in the crude drug market of Bombay

    Ashoka is one of the most legendary and sacred trees of India. The Ashoka bark has been very widely used in Indian System of Medicine. It has very good effects in Uterine, genital and reproductive disorders. Ashoka bark is one of the top 20 herbs traded in Ayurveda and Herbal Industry being main ingredient in almost all formulations to treat Gynaecological disorders. Due to more demand and less supply of authentic Ashoka, there is substitution or adulteration with other plants. In this study of Ashoka bark with special reference to its samples available in the crude drug market of Mumbai, we determined method and time of collection of the authentic Ashoka bark, its organoleptic characteristics, Pharmacognostical and physic-chemical along with market samples. A great difference was observed in authentic Ashoka bark and marketed samples. Reference Ashoka bark collected from Sanjay Gandhi National Botanical Garden, Mumbai as per procedures described in Charak Samhita Vimansthana chaper 8. Other five samples of Ashoka bark available in name of Ashoka were collected from different locations of Mumbai crude drug Market. All six samples were properly powdered, sieved and kept in air tight containers for further study. In this study, emphasis is led upon standardisation of Ashoka - Saraca asoca (Roxb.) and its samples available in the crude drug market

    Internationally there is an emerging interest to adopt and study the Ayurvedic medicines. To exploit its potentials to bring out the therapeutic approaches available in the oldest system of medicines and to put Ayurvedic products from our Natural heritage to National and international healthcare program with competence in the Global Healthcare market, there is extreme need of generating evidential data. The Ayurvedic products like pharmaceuticals products need to be standardized and evaluate with application of reliable evaluatory methods from Modern sciences. A complete literature review on the basis of systematic capture from diverse sources is extremely essential prior to designing pre-clinical and clinical studies. Authenticated and standardized raw materials need to be utilized to lead a quality product. Phytochemical standardization and development of qualitative parameters with the various analytical techniques is also essentials for assurance of quality of single or polyherbal formulations. In order to established reasonable safety of Ayurvedic therapeutics in clinical trials, toxicity studies are of important concerns. To explore effective dosages to be employed for clinical trials for the formulations under evaluations or to demonstrate new phramcological activities of already known medicinal plants or discovery of new natural prodcuts, it becomes obvious to conduct Phyto-phamacological evaluation in fairly reliable animals models. To survive in Global market, clinical research in compliance with internationally acceptable guidelines has to be conducted. All these above ideas are to develop a stable, viable, safe and efficacious Ayurvedic product to the application of Ayurvedic and modern research methodologies

    An Exigency for Ice Core Studies to Determine Spatio-temporal Variability in Moisture Sources and Impact of Black Carbon – Mineral Aerosols on the Himalayan Glaciers

    Himalayan glaciers‒ the store house of fresh water outside the polar region contributes ~45% of the total river flow by glacial melt in the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra watersheds which supports the livelihood of ~500 million people . The sustainability of these rivers is being questioned because of the growing evidences of accelerated glacier retreat in the recent decades, which is expected to have cascading effects on the mountainous areas and their surrounding lowlands. The rapid melting of Himalayan glaciers reveals their sensitivity to ongoing changes in climate dynamics, and if the current trend continues, rivers that rely heavily on snow/ice melt are expected to suffer hydrological disruptions to the point where some of the most populous areas may ‘run out of water’ during the dry season. Therefore, efforts are being made to study the glacier mass balance trends in order to understand the patterns and causes of recent recessional trend. Despite their importance, the absence of long-term mass-balance and remote sensing data restricts our knowledge of the Himalayan glaciers’ sensitivity/ response to climate change. Furthermore, such studies may be insufficient unless are compared to long-term glacier fluctuations (millennial and multi-millennial time scales), which aid in better understanding the natural trends of and human impacts on climate change, as well as assessing the causes and possible future of contemporary shrinking glaciers. This will also improve our understanding of past glacier behaviour in the context of primary causes of glacier change, which is critical for water resource management and understanding climate variability in high alpine areas where alternative proxy climate archives are typically scarce. Therefore, it is pertinent to pool our scientific resources and energy (i) towards understanding the Himalayan glaciers’ feeders (precipitation sources) and how they changed over time (geological and historical), as well as the causes of glaciers recession, one of which has been identified as (ii) black soot (carbon) in aerosol pollution

    Treatment satisfaction and safety of sitagliptin versus pioglitazone in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus inadequately controlled on metformin monotherapy

    Background: This study was designed to assess the treatment satisfaction between Sitagliptin versus Pioglitazone added to Metformin in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).Methods: We conducted a prospective, open label, randomized, parallel group study in SIMS, Hapur, U.P. Eligible patients fulfilling inclusion criteria were randomized into two groups having 25 patients in each group using tab Sitagliptin 100mg,tab Pioglitazone 30mg added to ongoing tab Metformin (500mg) therapy for 16 weeks. The follow-up visits were on weeks 4, 12 and 16.Results: 16 weeks later, addition of Sitagliptin 100mg compared to that of Pioglitazone 30mg to ongoing Metformin therapy provided similar glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) lowering efficacy in patients with T2DM with inadequate glycemic control on metformin monotherapy. Change in HbA1c in group1 was -0.656±0.21% (p<0.0001) whereas in group 2 was -0.748±0.35% (p<0.0001). Hence decrease in HbA1c from baseline was more in group2.Both treatments were well tolerated with negligible risk of hypoglycaemia. Weight loss was observed with Sitagliptin in contrast to weight gain seen in Pioglitazone.Conclusions: In this study, Sitagliptin 100 mg along with metformin therapy in comparison to pioglitazone 30 mg plus metformin therapy was effective, well-tolerated and improved glycemic control in both the groups. Addition of pioglitazone had cause oedema and weight gain to the patients whereas sitagliptin caused weight loss in its patients

The advantages offered by the use of fly ash in concrete has impelled engineers to further extend the use of this waste product in the form of ‘High Volume Fly Ash Concrete’ (HVFAC). In the present paper; results of a study concerning the effect of acidic environment on the compressive strength of HVFAC have been reported. On the basis of results obtained; it has been concluded that HVFAC may be a promising material under such types of aggressive environmental conditions
